Discuss Technology (U24: P2)

 Discuss Technology

Learning Outcome 1 (U24:P2): Understand the products that are produced within and across media industries

P2 (U24): Explain the use of converging technologies within an identified sector

Technical Convergence: Technical convergence is the combination of two or more technologies into a single device. This device allows the running of these technologies as one. Such as older equipment only being used for a specific task now being available in a device which can do more than just that task. E.g. A camera and a video camera being combined on an iPhone now able to do both things on the same device.

Advertising & Marketing

  • QR codes
A QR code is a code available on a different range of devices, these can be scanned using an app which then directs the user to a website or app which usally has the content of something that can be purchased by the user. These can also direct users to a link where they can view a certain product or website. Convergence is used here as users are able to use multiple devices as they are compatible with QR codes. Through scanning a QR code, it immediately transports the users to a direct link that the advertiser has intended, which in result hopefully ends up in more revenue.
  • The use of interactive adverts being available on smart phones
Interactive adverts are adverts which use convergence in technology to then be able to send users to different social media accounts where the user can become even more involved with this brand or company. Interactive adverts also use personal data then tailor the adverts to the specific customer to try entice them more by personalising it to them almost as if it was specifically made just for them.
  • Optimising
Technology now optimises the information from a source to fit the screen that the consumer is using, whether that be an iPhone, Laptop, iPad, Nokia smart phone or Computer screen. This is an example of convergence as it shows that the advert has been coded and produced with different platforms and consumer needs.
